About the Club

Who are we?

A Private Members’ Club in the Heart of Historic Bury St. Edmunds

Our aim is to be a place of community in the heart of this bustling town. We bring together members from various walks of life and not only farmers. We come together as a community to appreciate the beautiful surroundings of the premises and to socialise, network and build relationships.

What we Stand for

A Club with History

From all the way back in 1947, when the club was founded, the club has been a proud supporter of the fascinating and rich history of the town.

A Club with Heritage

10 Northgate Street is a Grade 1 listed property that dates back to the Medieval period. And with numerous extensions over the years, you can see history evolve in our building.

A Club with Heart

As a member’s club, we bring people together. Even more, we support the community by providing a beautiful space for events, business, and family.

Our History

c.1350

The 14th century 3-bay hall, now known as the Lower Lounge and parts of the Northgate room are the oldest parts of the site.

18th Century

At this time the property was further extended and as happened to many timber framed properties in the town a brick skin was put on it.

1947

After passing through the famous Greene dynasty, John Wollaston Greene sold the building and the rest, as they say, is history…

From 1947 to Today

The original founders, a group of farmers and local businesspeople, purchased the club property when we still had food rationing; and when there were very few places to eat in Bury St Edmunds.

The Club Was a Success

Though definitive membership numbers are difficult to find for the early days, the club has expanded to around 450 members as of 2019, and become a staple of the Bury dining scene and a local institution.

A Place for Community

And so the club remains… We are happy to accept new members from the local community and beyond, through our country membership!

Sounds like you?

We look forward to hearing from you.
